How to Detect and Respond to Projection

We all project, a lot! It's the way our biological systems process our experience of being. It's essentially unavoidable! The opposite of projection is perception. They are mutually exclusive to humans, the ability to project and perceive. Meditation, prayer, and the like are mechanisms to isolate the two and encourage perception, as that is the space where things are actually happening.

They say “Be here now” and this is why! Having said all that, in answer to the question…

You can tell when someone is projecting in an unproductive manner when:

1. They don't make sense. When the facts simply don't line up and they can't see it. All the convincing in the world doesn't work. Stop trying.

2. Their espoused values, actions, and words don't align.

3. They argue over non issues to distract from the ability of others to perceive.

4. They get others to question their own perceptions.

5. They create chaos.

6. They are focused outside the present moment on drama which ultimately is not theirs.

7. They focus on others instead of themselves.

8. They try to fix and control outside instead of in.

   
   

You can't possibly change this in another, however. All one can do is try to see it in themselves and do their best to be what they want to see rather than creating and living in projections. I can assure you, if you're focused on another you're projecting. The most constructive thing to do, in those moments, is turn the same lens on to yourself and get to work!
